The Community Track
The Foundations Community Track has been put on hiatus through Fall 2026. In the meantime, come check out our first social workshop “Sushi & Sashiko” on February 11, 2026.
The KHS High School Foundations Community Track is a new and innovative option for keeping high school students connected to the community and their peers during the sometimes hectic years of homeschooling for high school. With an emphasis on service and socials, the Foundations Community Track offers a way to gain valuable volunteer hours while also learning about the issues facing our nearby neighborhoods in an authentic, experiential way.
Community Service
Each month, students will get an overview of a social issue within our community. Via a Google Classroom, information including the historical development of the issue, the impact on humanity here and in other places, innovative solutions being applied in communities, and an introduction to our local organization partner and how they are working to make a difference for our area. The details of our service projects will follow, including date/time, directions, estimated length, and the type of activity we will take on. Reminders will also be shared at the monthly workshops.
Reminder: Volunteer service looks great on applications for jobs or colleges!
When we gather for our service projects, students will have the chance to learn first-hand the local implications for families and communities struggling to thrive. Through service, they will see that their actions have value and that they can make a difference. They will be introduced to career options, research ideas, and humanitarian causes they may never have considered before.
Our local partners could include
Saint Andrew UCC/Supplies Over Seas
Adopt Me! Bluegrass Pet Rescue
La Casita Center
Louisville Grows
Beargrass Creek Alliance/Beargrass Thunder
Dare to Care Food Bank
Workshops and Outings
Monthly workshops and outings bring students together for “socializing with structure,” with built-in support for more introverted or anxious students. Not every teen is able to jump right into a casual meetup with peers and come away knowing everyone’s names, social media handles, and plans to game online together later. Community Track workshops will be designed to facilitate low-stress interactions and easy shared situations that help grow confidence and familiarity among the group.
If nothing else, they can join together in a collective cringe at the overly enthusiastic coordinator who laughs way too long at her own jokes. Spoiler alert: it’s me!
