Welcome to KHS High School Foundations!

KHS High School Foundations is dedicated to building educational opportunities for high school students by providing programming in core academic subjects as well as career exploration, life skills, volunteerism, and social support. Our goal is to nurture a strong foundation of knowledge and social and emotional competencies to enable high school students to excel beyond their K-12 years. Foundations is an inclusive, secular high school program that welcomes all homeschoolers.

Volunteering

Volunteering gives students the chance to see their communities through a different lens and be inspired by the work they can do to lessen the impact of negative elements in the world.

Academics

The academic focus of Foundations helps students practice their communication skills through writing, giving presentations, and exploring various types of literature.

Social Connections

Students have ample opportunity for social development through hiking, crafting, gaming, and meme-ing with peers in an inclusive environment, building confidence and expanding their horizons.

About the coordinator

Carrie Hembree Torres

Carrie Hembree Torres has graduate degrees in Geography/Geology, with a concentration in Environmental Education. Over the years, she has toiled in many different work positions, such as an education coordinator at a nature center, an adjunct faculty member at a state university, a founding member of the program development team for the Nature Explore Program, an environmental consultant for nature preschools, and the “trash lady” with a solid waste education program.

Carrie currently serves as the Board President of KHS and coordinates the new KHS High School Foundations initiative. When she is not KHSing or teaching, Carrie enjoys volunteer work with Adopt Me! Bluegrass Pet Rescue, hiking slowly, digging through piles of random clutter on her kitchen counters, assorted crafting adventures, reading & listening to audiobooks, forgetting what she was going to say, and cats. She and her partner Mike have one daughter, who is in the 8th grade at Wildflowers and Explorations Academies.
